February 28, 2010Teacher, Do You Not Care That We Are Perishing?
Text: Matthew 8:23-27; Mark 4:35-41; Luke 8:22-25
Storms are a normal part of life in this world
There are natural storms ; There are situational storms; There are relational storms;
There are financial storms; There are physical storms; There are mental storms;
There are emotional storms; and There are spiritual storms
All of us have storm stories
Storms are just a natural and normal part of living in this world
Storms almost always create debris and devastation
Storms from the past help prepare us for those coming in the future
Storms tend to either expose selfishness and encourage selflessness
Storms have victims who need our compassion and survivors who inspire us with their story
Storms leave an impact on the land and lives they touch
Storms reveal both our fear (cowardice) and our faith (courage) in a very tangible way
Storms always leave us with the potential to repair, rebuild, or restore
When facing a storm we must....
- Determine to get through it no matter what it takes
- Decide not to make things worse by hurling accusations
- Display a measureable amount of confidence and commitment
- Discern between what is passing and what is permenant
Command: "Let us go over to the other side" (Mark 4:35)
Question: "Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?"
Answer from The Master
Matthew 8:26 "Why are you timid, you men of little faith?
Mark 4:40 "Why are you so timid? How is it that you have no faith?"
Luke 8:25 "Where is your faith?"
Storm Facts Verses Eternal Truths -- Once again...it's not HOW....it's WHO!
1. The presence of the storm does not hide the person of Jesus
2. The potential of the storm does not hurt the passion of Jesus
3. The peril of the storm does not hamper the purpose of Jesus
4. The path of the storm does not hinder the plan of Jesus
5. The power of the storm does not harass the peace of Jesus
The reason many never get to the other side is because they give up when the going gets tough
